Things to do when camping in Aquitaine

The region of Aquitaine comprises of five distinct departments, each with their own characteristics and charms; Dordogne, Gironde, Landes; Lot-et-Garonne and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

The gorgeous river is the standout feature of the Dordogne, where many outdoors activities can be enjoyed. Have fun on the water by kayaking or canoeing, or hike along the trails that follow the river before exploring the quaint towns and villages of the region. Highlights of the Dordogne include the Aquarium du Périgord, Eyrignac Manor, Lascaux Caves and Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle.

The sprawling vineyards of Gironde explain why the region is famed for its production of delicious wine, most notably the Medoc. The bustling city of Bordeaux boasts great shopping and dining opportunities as well as tourist attractions including the Place de la Bourse, Bordeaux cathedral, Basilica of Saint Michael and the Pey Berland Tower. On the coast, visitors can climb the striking Dune du Pilat before enjoying the charms of the seaside town of Arcachon.

A deluge of beautiful lakes and lovely beaches can be found in Landes, as well as the vibrant resort of Biscarrosse. It’s a great region to explore on foot or by bike, as well as taking in top attractions such as Biscarrosse Lake, Gascony Moors Natural Regional Park and Labenne Zoo. Verdant green spaces are the feature of Lot-et-Garonne, where holidaymakers can enjoy the sites of Bonaguil Castle, Museum of Fine Arts of Agen and Agen Cathedral.

To the far-reaching south of the region, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques is home to the French Basque part of the country.
