The region around the city the French themselves call Perigord and it is a truly wonderful area.
Cliffs, castles and caves of Lascaux
In the southeast, around the town of Sarlat, you will find the ‘Perigord Noir’. This is the classic part of Dordogne with limestone cliffs, castles such as ‘Beynac’ or ‘Castlenaud’ and picturesque villages of ‘Domme’ and ‘Laroque Gageac’. You will find the world famous caves with stalagmites and stalactites, and even prehistoric paintings - the replica of Lascaux is a must.
