Games on the go

For children, of course, a car journey is always long. How do you keep them occupied during that long drive, without them spending the whole time on their phones or watching movies? With these games, the car journey will go a lot faster and you will be at your holiday destination in no time!

Animal Word Snake

Word Snake

Begin with an animal, e.g. Horse, and with the last letter of that word E, you have to name another animal, e.g. Elephant. The next one then names another animal starting with a T. The one who doesn't know the answer anymore loses the game. You can also do this with car brands, countries, capital cities, etc.

Paarden tellen

Horse Counting

A game for when you have 2 children in the back seat who love horses. Agree on a duration (e.g. 15 minutes) and each on their side counts the horses that are in the fields. The winner is the one who has counted the most horses at the end.

No yes, no no

No yes, no no

Answer questions without using 'yes' or 'no'. If you use these or wait too long to answer, you are finished. Pretty tricky! You can also add 'uhh' to make it extra difficult.

I'm going on a trip and I'm taking with me

I'm going on a trip and I'm taking with me

A classic among car games! Every one has to add an object to the list, which gets longer and longer. You start with 'I'm going on holiday and taking....' and then name something you are taking with you, for example a tent. The second person repeats the sentence, the first object, and adds one. The third names the 2 previous objects and adds something again. The one who cannot name all the objects anymore is finished.

scavenger hunt

Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

Give each child a list of items to watch for while driving. Check off each item when they find it. The list can be made up ahead of time and adjusted for the scenery. For a younger child who can’t read, you might draw a little picture of each item next to the word so they will know what to look for.

Who am I

Who am I

For this game, you need a piece of paper and a pen. Someone writes a person or profession on a piece of paper, for example, a famous singer. The others may then ask 20 questions that can only be answered with yes or no, to find out who the person has in mind. The person who gives the right answer gets to go next.

A games book

A Games book

A comprehensive games or holiday book for the road with a variety of topics. Puzzles, mazes and find the differences are games that all children will enjoy.

Number Plate Bingo

Number Plate Bingo

This game can be played in a variety of ways - here are two suggestions.

You will need paper and pens. Everyone writes the 26 letters of the alphabet on a piece of paper. Every time they see one of those letters on the number plate of a passing car, they can cross the letters off. The first one to cross off all the letters of the alphabet is the winner.

Make bingo cards in advance on which you put the country abbreviations you can find on the number plates. Include some unusual countries that you don't often see. If you see a car with a particular number plate, you can tick the box. Tip: You can also put in the same country codes several times to fill up the bingo card faster. Is the card full? Then you have bingo and you are the winner.

Games to play while at a service area

Even during a stopover, it is nice not to just go to the toilet and drive on again. Take some time to eat something, stretch your legs, and play a game. Think skipping ropes, blowing bubbles, playing football or pavement chalk. Then get back into the car completely refreshed!
